BACKGROUND

The Los Angeles City Fire Department has a transfer opportunity for one (1) Senior Communications Electrician to join the Fire Communications Dispatch Support Section (FCDSS).

Reporting directly to the FCDSS Captain, this position serves as the lead technical resource responsible for supporting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving the Department's critical land mobile radio, mobile data, cellular, and telecommunications systems. The position supervises Communications Electricians while coordinating with Department personnel, ITA, vendors, contractors, and allied agencies to ensure reliable communications supporting firefighter safety and emergency operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the FCDSS Captain, the Senior Communications Electrician performs duties including:

  • Leads, assigns, and performs installation, maintenance, repair, testing, and troubleshooting of Department communications systems and equipment.
  • Supervises and mentors Communications Electricians while ensuring quality workmanship, safety, and operational readiness. 
  • Coordinates communications projects involving ITA, contractors, utility providers, manufacturers, and outside agencies.
  • Evaluates communications equipment and recommends improvements to systems, equipment, and operations.
  • Maintains accurate logs, maintenance records, asset accountability, and technical documentation.
  • Assists with planning, deployment, and technical support for major incidents, planned events, and disaster response.
  • Supports mobile and portable radio systems, mobile data computers (MDCs), cellular technologies, and associated communications infrastructure.
  • Provides technical training and guidance to Department personnel on communications equipment and operational procedures.
  • Assists with procurement planning, equipment testing, inventory management, and lifecycle replacement of communications assets.
  • Operates Department vehicles and transports personnel, equipment, and tools to field locations throughout the City.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications established by the City of Los Angeles for the Senior Communications Electrician (Class Code 3638) and possess all required licenses and certifications as outlined in the official City job bulletin.

City employees must have status in the classification and must have successfully completed his/her/their probationary period in the classification for which they are applying for.
