WORK SCHEDULE: Work hours would be 9 hours per day for 2
days per week, at a total of 18 hours per week. The scheduling options
may be Tuesday & Thursday; Tuesday & Wednesday; or Wednesday &
Thursday. Work schedule is based on
the operational needs of this Division on an as-needed basis.
HOURLY RATE: $24.46
This is not
a permanent Civil
Service position. The candidate selected
for this part-time position will be required to work on an as-needed basis with a maximum of 980 hours per service
year and no minimum
guaranteed number of hours per week or per year. A service year begins on the start date of employment and on
each anniversary date thereafter. The
selected candidate must pass a physical exam
administered by a City physician. All City employees are subject to a background check, including fingerprinting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Maintenance
& Construction Helper does a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks in
construction, maintenance and repair activities.
Maintenance
& Construction Helpers assist Drill Rig Operators and Materials Testing
Engineering Associates in the operation of heavy-duty drilling rigs and related
equipment, extraction of representative soil and rock samples for laboratory
testing, and related work.
Maintenance & Construction Helpers
enhance the safety
of a potentially hazardous work environment
by helping lift and move heavy equipment, operating vehicles and machines, and
providing traffic control when necessary.
Maintenance & Construction Helpers
work outdoors in various locations
according to the drilling needs of City construction projects.
Work activities may include:
Moving and placing materials and equipment.
Helping to locate
specified drill sites in the field with the use of maps and substructure plans.
Assisting in the operation of drilling equipment.
Installing and retrieving steel drilling augers
and soil samples
from test holes.
Assisting in the operation of pavement coring
equipment.
Making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
Helping to take measurements.
Assisting with the closing of lanes or streets, or otherwise maneuvering traffic away from drilling locations through the use of arrow-board trucks, safety cones, and related equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent;
2. Possession of a valid California driver’s license (Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to this position if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI);
3. One year of full-time, paid experience in construction or landscaping work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Strength to perform average lifting up to 70 pounds frequently and over 70 pounds occasionally.
Good hearing ability, eyesight, balance and equilibrium.
