An Equipment Specialist I interviews using agency representatives and shop supervisors to determine equipment needs; conducts research and analysis, prepares bid requirements, specifications and drawings of vehicles to satisfy these needs; and reviews vendor bids and recommends awards of contracts for the purchase of these items. An Equipment Specialist I supervises the inspection and acceptance of equipment and vehicles and oversees the introduction of the equipment into operations via operator training and the distribution of technical information and manuals; and supervises the preparation of information for introduction into Fleet Services’ Vehicle Management and Inventory Control System. An Equipment Specialist I prepares purchase requisitions or sub-purchase orders with detailed specifications to purchase Fleet Services repair shop tools. An Equipment Specialist I reviews, analyzes, and prepares reports on faulty equipment operation, assisting in making improvements in the operation and efficiency of the overall fleet. An Equipment Specialist I maintains a thorough knowledge of Federal and State legislative mandates, local ordinances, and various codes and submits recommendations for compliance of both new and existing equipment.
Note:
This position has become more critical since the introduction of more
complex equipment to the fleet, such as automated refuse collection trucks,
alternative fueled vehicles like natural gas-powered sweepers, and hybrid
gas-electric passenger cars. In
addition, the introduction of the Vehicle Management System now requires
expertise in preparing information for input into computer systems for
maintenance and inventory management.
