The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


Assists in performing field and laboratory soil tests, such as soil classification and soil compaction tests.
Assists in processing Shelby tube samples to determine water contents and unit weights.
Assists in performing tests in the laboratory such as concrete compressive strength tests.
Picks up samples in the field and delivers to laboratory and logs and processes samples.
Assists in evaluating soils and materials test results .
Assists in performing concrete, soil, and materials testing on project sites within and outside of Southern California.
Assists in inspecting fabrication of pipes, concrete items, and other materials at manufacturing plants within and outside of California and the United States.
Assists in inspecting application of coatings and linings of pipes and other materials.
Assists in inspecting visual, physical, mechanical, chemical, and other quality control tests of pipes, coatings, linings, and other materials.
Assists in conducting and verifying destructive and non-destructive testing of pipe materials, coatings, linings, paints, and other materials.
Assists in inspecting the welding & protective coatings of pipes and other materials at construction and LADWP sites within and outside Southern California.
Assists in inspecting prefabricated concrete vaults, tunnel liners, and other materials.
Assists in inspecting materials and products purchased by LADWP.
Overtime is available. Travel is required.
Overnight stays for days or weeks at a time are required while working on out-of-town work assignments, including out of the country, which will require a valid passport.
Perform related duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Ability: 
Candidates will be evaluated for the following work-related skills, knowledge, abilities, and other qualifications by interview or other means, as specified: 

Requires proficiency in basic mathematics.
Knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Previous experience in soil, concrete, and materials testing and/or pipe fabrication, materials, and welding inspection is desirable.

Eligible candidate must have status in the Class of Materials Testing Technician (Class Code 7968). 

A valid California Driver's License is required and must be maintained during the course of employment.
