Description
The Community Law Corps (CLC) focuses on reducing blight and improving the quality of life in Los Angeles neighborhoods. CLC staff work with community stakeholders, government agencies and law enforcement to identify both chronic and emerging issues and use creative problem solving, diverse resources and civil remedies to resolve issues.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Deputy City Attorneys assigned to this Division work closely with the Supervisor to implement both preventative and proactive measures to address nuisance situations, locations and issues. This includes completing legal research to ascertain property ownership; addressing legal issues related to entry, enforcement and prevention; and establishing inter- and intra-governmental task forces and collaborations. CLC identifies emerging issues, works with appropriate City Attorney staff to write or amend ordinances and laws, and assists the public with navigating City bureaucracy.
Requirements
The Deputy City Attorney assigned to this Division must have the following required Qualifications:
• Minimum three (3) years of experience practicing law in California Courts;
• Strong written and oral communication and problem-solving skills;
• Experience working effectively with governmental agencies, public officials, law enforcement, and members of the public;
• Ability to collaborate with and coordinate non-prosecutorial responses, both within our office and with other city agencies.
• Ability to manage cases, problems and projects with minimal supervision;
• Knowledge of the legal and administrative remedies available to resolve quality of life problems;
• Experience with crime prevention and problem-solving strategies to address public safety concerns.
Desired Qualifications
• Experience in drafting local ordinances and knowledge of the Los Angeles City Charter;
• Background in Housing, Land Use, Criminal Law and/or Civil Litigation;
Probation
Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a two year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successfully completing this probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
