Minimum Experience Requirements
The position is open to all Survey Party Chief (SPC) I’s currently employed in the Bureau of Engineering. Possession of a California Land Surveyors license is highly desirable.

The minimum requirement for appointment to this pay grade is:
  1. Two (2) years of full-time, professional experience as a Survey Party Chief with the City of Los Angeles.
Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements by the time of appointment.

NOTE: A valid California’s driver’s license and a good driving record are required.

Summary of Duties

A Survey Party Chief II performs planning, organizing, and scheduling complex projects. The incumbent is expected to perform duties which include, but are not limited, to a thorough knowledge and operation of Robotic Total Stations, AutoCAD and Carlson software platforms, GPS receivers, controllers and static post processing, supervision and coordination of multiple staff members as well as acting as a back-up to the District Office Supervisor. Delegate responsibility and authority for work completion, balance assignments, and handle multiple operations. The incumbent must have a keen grasp of the legal principles involved in cadastral and geodetic surveying. They must be able to read and write legal descriptions and represent the city in verbal and written correspondence.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The Bureau of Engineering is looking for candidates who possess the following skills, knowledge, and abilities including but not limited to:
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communications;
  • Excellent skills in record keeping;
  • Excellent skills in preparing technical correspondences;
  • Excellent skills in optimizing systems and procedures;
  • Extensive knowledge of Land Surveying principles, Boundary Control, legal principals and practices, reading and interpreting construction plans and construction staking techniques;
  • Knowledge of the strategic planning process;
  • Excellent knowledge of Survey office procedures including research and City Engineer field book indexing procedures;
  • Good knowledge of AutoCAD principals;
  • Excellent ability to identify and resolve technical problems, exercise independent judgment in investigating problems and taking appropriate action;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both upward and downward; and
  • Ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization as well as professionals from the private sector.
