- The term of employment will be one (1) year or until a regular appointment can be made from an eligible list. An emergency appointment is not a regular appointment. It is a temporary appointment which does not require that you successfully compete in the Civil Service examination process. During the time of the emergency appointment, an Architect Certification List for the Full-Time Architect position will be established, and the position will be opened to fill on a permanent basis at the discretion of the City.

Minimum Experience Requirements:
Candidates must meet the requirements below by the application deadline:
1. Two years of full-time paid professional architectural experience at the level of an Architect and;
2. Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect issued by the California State Board of Architectural Examiners.
Summary of Duties:
An Architect assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of architectural employees engaged in professional and sub-professional work; performs responsible professional architectural work such as preparing, and/or supervising and reviewing the preparation of designs, plans, details, specifications, estimates, studies and reports and observes construction to ensure architectural integrity, and compliance with agencies having jurisdiction; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.
The Architect will be responsible for supervising Architectural Associates and managing architectural consultants engaged in the design and preparation of construction bid documents for various Public Buildings and Open Spaces projects on behalf of client City Departments such as the Department of Recreation and Parks, the Bureau of Sanitation, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of General Services and other agencies. This position oversees the completion of
architectural working drawings and prepares detailed cost estimates, specifications, plans, models and material lists for a wide variety of buildings, structures and installations. This position supervises in-house architectural design efforts, coordinates all disciplines for construction documents, oversees bid and award, and manages design services during construction process design.
This position reviews change order requests, Requests for Information and other contractor requests, schedules, reviews, expedites and coordinate project activities, reviews and revises work schedules on an on-going basis, sets priorities and availability of staff and equipment to perform design tasks and checks the progress and completion of projects in the work program.

The Bureau of Engineering is looking for candidates who possess the following skills, knowledge and abilities, including but not limited to:
- Excellent skills in verbal communications, in written communication and preparing technical reports and correspondence.
- Good skills in applying the principles and practices of architectural design.
- Good skills in applying the principles and practices of architectural project delivery.
- Good skills in using design software such as Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.
- Excellent skills in organizing project management activities and ability to analyze and resolve construction disputes.
- Ability to deliver a quality work project on time and on budget, staying within the parameters of the original project scope.
- Ability to lead and direct a group of professional employees to analyze and resolve complex issues with effective solutions.
- Ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization and partnering agencies such as the Mayor's Office, various Council Offices, the City Administrative Office, the Board of Public Works, & various Public Works Bureaus.
- Ability to analyze and respond to urgent project management situations and
effectively delegate assignments to support staff.
