Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
1. Must currently have a full time, regular appointment as a Structural Engineer with the
City of Los Angeles or have status in the classification.
Summary of Duties:
The Structural Engineering Division (SED) provides support services for the various programs
in the Bureau by handling complex structural design, construction, review and inspection
issues that concern, among others, municipal buildings, underground structures, pedestrian
and vehicular bridges, tunnels, retaining structures, and various civil engineering structures.
Structural Engineer is the lead expert for interpreting various structural design codes and
standards including AASHTO, LABC, ACI, AISC, NDS, ASCE-7, and maintains the knowledge
with the latest changes in seismic design codes by participating in SED’s technical
presentations, attending seminars and providing in-house training to staff.
A Structural Engineer (SE) will lead and represent BOE in meetings with other Bureaus,
contractors, consultants and other agencies regarding complex structural engineering issues
for design and construction projects.
Generally, manages a section of SED, supervising and
overseeing an engineering group for the day-to-day activities of engineering associates,
coordinating the work of drafting technicians and being the lead engineer for projects in design
and construction.
The position closely oversees the engineering group engaged in checking
structural plans for conformance to code regulations which may include variety of complex
structures as well as transportation structures.
The SE manages the preparation of plans,
designs, and specifications for a variety of complex structures; prepares special structural
engineering studies; provides structural engineering support during construction; applies
sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work
force; fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities and is responsible for
administrative assignments.
