THE ROLE: 

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Mayor’s Office Budget Director is responsible for developing, managing and tracking the Mayor’s Office internal budget. The Director will develop the annual office budget by researching, running analytics, and writing financial reports. The Director will develop strong relationships with office leadership while providing candid and confidential status assessments to the Chief of Staff and Executive Team. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, manage and track the Mayor’s Office annual budget. 

  • Provide regular reports to the Chief of Staff on the financial status of the office.

  • Perform financial monitoring and analysis, including salary projections.

  • Prepare and monitor revenue and source of fund expenditures and year-end reconciliation/close out activities.

  • Work closely with the City Clerk's office to process financial transactions needed 

  • Maintain strong relationships with the Mayor's Office Executive and Senior Staff, City officials and other stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is ready to work in a high-energy and collaborative work environment. The budget is deadline-driven and requires the ability to work under pressure. The ideal candidate must be able to quickly perform financial analysis, research, and make recommendations. 




PREFERRED CHARACTERISTICS AND SKILLS:

  • General knowledge of City governing and administrative documents, such as the Los Angeles City Charter, Los Angeles Administrative Code, City Ordinances, and the Mayor’s Executive Directives, sufficient to ensure compliance with City processes, procedures, and regulations (training is available). 

  • Highly ethical and trustworthy. 

  • Track record of establishing targets and delivering results.

  • Expert understanding of budgets/financial statements and accounting principles. 

  • Experience working with senior government or private sector leaders.

  • Ability to thoughtfully communicate with and respectfully engage diverse stakeholders around a shared vision.

  • Problem-solver and change-agent.

  • Excellent communication skills. 

  • Innovative and flexible.

  • Able to effectively represent the City and the Mayor with all of its constituencies.

  • Ability to work within a team made up of energetic and vocal members. 

  • Strong Microsoft Office and Google Suite skills, especially Excel and Sheets. 

  • Knowledge in FMS and Workday (training is also available).  


EDUCATION

Undergraduate degree required. Advanced degree in business, public administration, or economics is a plus. Five years of  financial/budget/accounting experience is preferable.
