POSITION SUMMARY
The Neighborhood Council Election Assistant works to support EmpowerLA with awareness and engagement of the Neighborhood Council System and the Neighborhood Council elections through content development, community asset mapping, and event participation. The ideal candidate for this role will come with a passion for civic and community engagement and be motivated to work with individuals and communities from diverse backgrounds.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- In partnership with the Public Information Officer, develop graphics, copy, and other assets for print, social media, email and newsletter, website, presentations, and other platforms to support Neighborhood Council elections.
- Identify and map key locations of neighborhood activity and places of high foot traffic for elections activities
- Maintain Neighborhood Council outreach database (people, organizations, community spaces, resources, metrics) to support Neighborhood Council elections outreach
- Provide administrative support as needed for Field and Administrative Services staff, including attending community events, workshops, and other engagement activities to support Neighborhood Council elections outreach efforts
- Other duties as assigned under the supervision of the Director of Awareness and Engagement
REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Proficiency using graphic design tools to develop engaging print and digital content (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, etc)
- Familiarity with Google Suite and social media platforms and trends, including Instagram, Facebook, X, Bluesky, and Nextdoor.
- Self-starter with strong critical thinking, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
PREFERRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Understanding of digital and email marketing platforms (Constant Contact, Mailchimp, NationBuilder, NGP VAN, PDI, etc).
- Working knowledge of the Neighborhood Council system and Los Angeles city government.
- Paid or volunteer experience in campaigns, community engagement, and/or grassroots organizing.
- Valid CA driver’s license and access to a car, reliable personal transportation, or the ability to travel to community events around Los Angeles.
HOURS:
Election Assistants are employed on an as-needed basis. Working hours will be scheduled to meet EmpowerLA goals, which may include evenings and weekends as assigned. Election Assistants will be limited to a maximum of 1,040 hours per service year. A service year begins on the start date of employment and on each anniversary date thereafter. There is a minimum of ten (10) work hours a week with a maximum of 39 hours per week. Work schedules are flexible, and scheduling will be coordinated with the selected candidate(s) based on operational needs and availability.
LOCATION:
Selected candidates may work from EmpowerLA's Downtown Los Angeles (200 N. Spring St.) or Van Nuys (13310 Sylvan St.) offices. This position also offers the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, including remote work, based on operational needs and assigned duties. Candidates may be required to attend in-person meetings, events, and other City of Los Angeles activities, as needed.
