The Department of Water and Power has a City Transfer Opportunity for one (1) Laboratory Technician D position in the Water Quality Division, Water Quality Laboratory Operations – Daily Bacteriological Testing group.

The work location will be at the Water Quality Laboratory/555 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA 91101. The work schedule will be Continuous Operations 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. A valid California Class C Driver’s License is required and must be maintained during the course of employment.

Eligible candidates must currently be on a regular appointment to Laboratory Technician (7854).

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Performs routine water microbiological analyses such as Membrane Filtration, Multiple Tube Fermentation, Chromogenic Substrate MPN, and Plate Count Methods, which are used to culture and identify Coliform and heterotrophic bacteria.
•Performs laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control tests for drinking water in the Daily Bacteriological Testing group.
• Transfers bacterial colonies to confirmatory media like Brilliant Green Bile and E. Coli broth.
• Performs bacteriological staining (e.g., Gram Stain) to confirm the morphological characteristic and dye reaction of certain bacteria when appropriate.
• Evaluates testing results and provides reports to appropriate personnel.
• Enters test results into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Sample Acknowledgment Management System (SAMS).
• Prepares various growth media used for microbiological analyses of water.
• Disposes biohazard wastes generated during laboratory operations.
• Maintains laboratory supply inventory by receiving and stacking laboratory supplies.
• Prepares and updates laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
• Performs necessary support functions (e.g., glassware washing and housekeeping for the working area) in the Water Quality Laboratory as well as other related duties.
• Overtime and holiday work may be required.

Skills, knowledge, abilities and other qualifications by interview or other means, as specified:
• Knowledge of microbiological principles including methodologies used in processing the samples, quality assurance and quality control, data interpretation, basic concepts and their role in monitoring microbiological techniques in sample set up, sample processing, and confirmation of results.
• Ability to demonstrate strong analytical skills.
• Ability to use independent judgement in evaluating microbiological results.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to communicate effectively (written/verbal) and exercise sound judgment.
