ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $113,424 - $216,978

POSITION: The Consumer and Workplace Protection Section has an immediate opening for an experienced attorney. The effectiveness of the City Attorney’s Office depends upon the continued recruitment and hiring of excellent and diverse legal talent. SECTION: The Consumer and Workplace Protection Section protects California consumers by engaging in complex litigation involving violations of consumer and workplace protection laws. The Consumer and Workplace Protection Section prosecutes individuals and businesses that engage in false advertising, financial fraud, and unlawful, deceptive and fraudulent conduct that victimizes consumers. The unit has obtained millions of dollars in restitution for victims and has protected countless California consumers from financial fraud.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The selected attorney will perform a variety of complex legal duties including evaluating and prosecuting civil consumer protection cases. The selected attorney may also have the opportunity to work on criminal consumer protection matters. Typical duties include, but are not limited to: developing and vertically prosecuting civil enforcement actions (typically pursuant to California Business and Professions Code sections 17200 and 17500); evaluating, conducting in-depth investigations and other legal research; negotiating and drafting settlements and restitution plans; developing legislative proposals and recommendations; interacting with consumer advocates; working with local, state and federal regulatory agencies on investigations and consumer protection projects; participating in training seminars and outreach events; and responding to consumer complaints. Although this position will be focused on civil litigation, the selected attorney can also conduct criminal prosecutions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must be licensed to practice law in all of the courts in the State of California. Additional qualifications include:
? Civil and/or criminal litigation experience concerning complex matters;
? Strong desire to serve the public interest;
? Demonstrate high-level written and oral communication skills;
? Strong research and writing skills in complex areas of law;
? Demonstrate aptitude to complete multiple tasks under tight deadlines and complete a variety of assignments in a timely manner;
? Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment;
? Ability to work well with members of a team;
? Ability to handle a fast-paced rigorous litigation caseload; and
? Ability to work effectively with governmental agencies, law enforcement, victims, witnesses, and members of the public. 
? Ability to access and obtain criminal history information on cases, including via the Office’s criminal databases. Selected attorney will be expected to gather this information on their cases as needed. 
? Proficient in the search, entry and updating of cases in our criminal database, CCMS. This required qualification can be completed with training within six months from taking the position.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
? Experience drafting and filing civil complaints, pursuing material evidence through civil discovery, and litigating cutting-edge legal issues;
? Civil or criminal trial experience, experience taking and defending depositions and/or drafting and arguing motions; and
? Experience in handling consumer and/or workplace protection matters.

WRITING SAMPLE: Candidates are required to submit one recent writing sample for which they are the primary author.

PROBATION: Appointment to these exempt positions (non-Civil-Service) will be subject to a two (2) year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the two (2) year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
