Under the supervision of the Shop supervisor or the Senior mechanic, the Mechanical Helper performs the following duties:

  • Assist journey level craft employees such as the Sheet Metal Worker, Welder, Auto Painters and Auto Body Repairers, Equipment Mechanics, Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics, and Mechanical Repairers. Assist journey level craft workers by removing, replacing, disassembling, assembling, rebuilding, charging and replacing batteries, installing brackets on new vehicles, removing decals and lightbars from salvaged vehicles (this may require climbing on ladders or climbing up or on vehicles), repairing sirens by removing and/or replacing siren parts, and other tasks to assist journey level craft workers. Sanding vehicles and new parts with air sanders and by hand, masking vehicles with paper and tape to prevent overspray. Clean vehicles by hand washing and vacuuming, and repair locks and latches on vehicles. Use creepers to inspect, install, adjust or remove parts under vehicles. Assist Equipment Mechanics on and perform lighter mechanical tasks such as fluid changes, tire replacements and other light repairs under the supervision of an Equipment Mechanic. May also work in the small engine shop doing miscellaneous jobs such as repairing fire hose, repairing small engines and sharpening chainsaw chain. Perform repairs on gurneys, flashlights, and other small fire service related equipment. Employee is required to be able to perform the duties while using ladders, topside creepers, scaffolding and/or lifting platforms. 
  • SHOP CLEAN UP:  Clean and organize shop tools and equipment.  Sweep shop floor and outside work areas, clean and organize work benches and shop storage areas and perform other minor building maintenance as needed.
  • DRIVE CITY VEHICLES:  Transport vehicles, parts, personnel and move and park vehicles as needed. 
  • ADMINISTRATIVE AND CLERICAL DUTIES:  Attend morning meeting, submit daily timekeeping on work orders in computer and submit timekeeping for payroll purposes. Keep records of work performed, amount of time worked, and materials used.
